Joint Managing Partner
Head of Corporate Tax
As of January 2025, I am proud to serve as Dafferns’ Joint Managing Partner alongside Geoffrey Cox, while continuing as the firm’s specialist Corporate Tax Partner and Head of Corporate Tax.
In my role as Joint Managing Partner (JMP), I focus on the external, public, and client-facing aspects of the business. I remain deeply committed to advising a diverse range of clients on all aspects of their tax affairs – both UK and international, business and personal.
I specialise in advising owner managed businesses of all sizes, ranging from personal service company contractors to £100m turnover groups, working in sectors including manufacturing, distribution, service, construction, consulting, video games and software development. With a strong mixed, corporate and international tax background, I’m a trusted adviser to many subsidiaries of overseas parents as well as third sector not for profit organisations.
I have extensive experience of structuring transactions to achieve the most effective tax position. Whether that be buying or selling a business, restructuring a group or reconstructing a company’s activities, I will help you plot a tax efficient and practical path through the maze of relevant tax legislation.
I am an acknowledged specialist in the art of business valuations, with many years’ experience in the field. I regularly negotiate successfully with HMRC and provide an independent view in relation to business sales and purchases. Sadly, death and divorce are two further areas where my valuations expertise is sometimes required.
Having spent a number of years in my early career working in industry for a large multi-national group, I have hands-on practical experience of the challenges cross border VAT can throw up. Since then, I have built on that experience to develop a keen understanding of international aspects of UK VAT and, in recent months, have got to grips with the myriad of changes brought about by the UK’s exit from the EU.
I enjoy spending time with my family, indulging in our love of the British countryside, particularly anywhere with hills or mountains. I’m happy hill walking, but am in my element when a bit of adrenaline is thrown into the mix, throwing myself up and down a mountain bike trail. I enjoy the physical and mental challenge of indoor wall climbing & bouldering and I keep fit by playing competitive 5-a-side football – it’s a great way to push back the advancing years a little (or at least that’s what I keep telling myself!).
I’m an avid consumer of audio books and, in recent years, I’ve developed a keen interest in psychology. My colleagues will also be well aware (because I can’t stop talking about it!) that I am fascinated by the science of sleep.
Great to see you Brian, just a quick note to say thanks for your support on the deal. You have been and continue to be a most trusted advisor to me personally and to the company and I am most grateful for your hard work, pragmatism and critical attention to detail.
