All is not lost if you forgot to sign up by 31 July.
If you did try to register by the 14th of August you will have received the following message from HMRC:
“You must come back later to sign up. We’re unable to sign you up for Making Tax Digital for VAT at present.
This is either because a Direct Debit payment is due shortly or you are close to a filing period.
Submit your current return using your usual method, then sign up to use compatible software to submit your next return.
We will not charge you a penalty for this.”
