Christmas Eve – we have a last minute trade deal!

The devil will be in the detail of course, but the prospect of the UK crashing out of the EU without a trade deal on WTO terms looks to have receded.

Parliament will be recalled before New Year to vote on the proposed plan, but The UK government says

We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters

The Scottish and Welsh devolved Governments don’t seem to like it, but in Northern Ireland Arlene Foster appears happy.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says it is a

Good, fair and balanced deal

EU chief negotiator, Michel Barnier says

Today is a day of relief, but tinged by some sadness

The UK left the EU at the end of January, but remains under its trading rules until 31 December and the two sides have one week to get any deal formally approved in London and Brussels.

Its going to be an interesting last week to 2020 on the Brexit front…
